Blues Scale soloing: playing outside the box pattern

One of the first scales a guitarist learns to play is the Blues Scale. Too often, that is the last one they learn. This is a simple way to start venturing outside of that "box" pattern. I stress again, even if you don't learn theory you should learn the names of all the notes on the guitar. It will help you figure out what notes make up the scales and chords. This will speed up your creativity, taking a lot of the guess work out of things you hear in your head, or try to figure out. Look at my Guitar Lessons and Music Tips playlist for the video on learning your notes.

Enjoy. Learn. Share. @nathanfleet http://www.facebook.com/nathanfleetfanpage.com http://www.nathanfleet.com

Sorry for the low quality video. Made it in a rush and had low light and my laptop.

Also, a few people have asked about me being a lefty. I am not left-handed. It is easier to emulate the lesson if you are right handed. You see a mirror image.

Building guitar chords - using the major scale

Once you know the names of your notes within a Major scale you can start using those notes to build chords. Using a Root (1st  or starting note) 3rd (3rd note in the major scale sequence) and a 5th (5th note in the major scale sequence) you can start finding chords that work in harmony with you scale since the chords a built right from that scale. Root Third Fifth or R 3 5 is your formula for building Major, minor and diminished chords.

In this video:
1) take a C major scale C D E F G A B C
2) find the R 3 5 (C E G) 1st note, 3rd note and 5th note
3) Use those 3 notes across the guitar to build an form any  C chord.

Each major scale has 7 notes so you can build  7 basic chords from each note

C E G (Major)
D F A (minor)
E G B (minor)
F A C (Major)
G B D (Major)
A C E (minor)
B D F (diminished)

What you will find is that EVERY major scale has the same order of chords
Major, minor, minor, Major, Major, minor,diminished or simply M m m M M m dim

Learning the Notes on the guitar Part 2: Using the Guitar

This is for all beginner musicians. Learning theory is amazing but not everyone wants to commit the time, or they believe that it will take away from their creativity. This lesson is not about theory. It is just about learning the note names. By learning this you can discover things on your own. Exploration and discovery are so rewarding so if you aren't into theory, you definitely want to study this. If you are into theory this will kickstart your mind a bit.

The most important things you can learn on the guitar, aside from technique, are the names of the notes. This is not music theory, simply naming the notes on all frets and strings. Once you know the names of your notes you can figure out what you are playing and apply that to other positions on the guitar. Many guitarists learn "box" scales (scales that stay within a four fret section on the guitar) and they want to move that scale around. By learning the note names you will be able to discover new patterns. If you only know a few chords you can figure out what notes make up that chord, then build your own shapes that you don't often see in beginner chord books. If you want to solo over a chord progression you can use chord tones. Knowing the notes used in those chord will help you find those notes that will always sound great since they belong to the chord. Same goes with writing vocal lines, harmonies, bass lines etc...the list goes on. All without having to learn theory. @nathanfleet Enjoy. Learn. Share.

Learning the Notes Part1: The Piano

This is for all beginner musicians. Learning theory is amazing but not everyone wants to commit the time or they believe that it takes away from their creativity. This lesson is not about theory, just about learning the note names. From this you can discover things on your own. Exploration and discovery are so rewarding when you are learning an instrument so if you aren't into theory you definitely want to study this. If you are into theory this will kickstart your mind.

The most important thing you can learn on the guitar, aside from technique, are the names of the notes. This is not music theory, simply naming all the notes on all frets and strings. Why? Once you know the names of your notes you can figure out what you are playing and apply that to other positions on the guitar. Many guitarists learn "box" scales, scales that stay in one spot, and they want to move that scale around. Figuring out the notes in that scale allow you to play that scale on all stings and all available frets from your lowest note to the highest. If you only know a few chords you can figure out what notes make up that chord and then build your own chords, using those same notes, all over the guitar coming up with shapes that you don't often see in beginner chord books. If you want to solo over a series of chords, knowing the notes used in those chord will help you find the notes that will always sound great since they belong to the chord. Same goes with writing vocal lines, harmonies, bass lines....the list goes on. All without having to learn theory. @nathanfleet Enjoy. Learn. Share.

Guitar Raking Technique

RAKING - Sweeping is when your pick moves back and forth across the strings, Raking is a one-direction move that includes muting, un-muting and a destination note. There are so many ways and areas on the guitar that you can apply "raking" to but this example includes a basic "A" blues scale and "rakes" chords. Of coarse you can always rake any notes,it doesn't have to be a chord but when starting out, it is nice to explore your solo options through chord shapes you may already know. Enjoy. Learn. 12 EZ chords in 30 sec using F

Using this standard F chord, move it along the fret board to instantly find 11 other chords. It is so important to learn the notes on your guitar so that you can find all these other gems that many beginning guitarist never find. Starting with "F" on the first fret, moving up one fret at a time you get the following Major chords F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E @nathanfleet

Sweep Picking - Basics

Sweep Picking

This is a basic explanation of the motion, position and technique behind sweep picking with an example using 2 major chords, A and E. When you are writing your sweeping riff is it really important to know the chord progression and the notes within each chord you are playing. My sweeping exercise only uses two chords but ultimately, when you start a heavy sweeping solo you may have 6 chords to sweep over before it repeats so start with a few chords, then add more as you get comfortable moving up and down the fretboard. Less pick showing + less hand movement = more efficiency. @nathanfleet

12 EZ chords in 1 minute (using C)

This lesson takes the concept of using the basic C chord shape and moving it up the fretboard to get a new major chord. The trick here is, compensating for the open strings that you have on your basic C Chord. The lesson shows you how to "bar" what was an open string.

Even if you don't want to learn music theory, at least learn the notes on your fretboard. It will help you tremendously.

In this exercise moving up the neck we go C, C#/Bb, D, D#/Bb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B, C. This symbol '#' is called a 'sharp' and this symbol 'b', is called a 'flat' @nathanfleet if you have specific questions or lessons you want me to do. Enjoy, Learn. Share.

12 EZ Chords in 1minute

If you know your order of notes, this is a super easy way to get 12 chords using one shape. In this lesson I use D. The order of notes, one fret at a time or "semi-tone" starting from D is, D, D#, E , F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D(the octave of D. Rather than using the default G, C, A, E etc... try livening up your recordings and songs with higher versions of these chords.

3D Chef Theme

Just wanted to share a theme I did @BluePickMedia for a show called the 3D Chef. 3D Chef Theme
Thanks to Stereo3Dunlimited for kind permission to let you all hear this tune. I used 3 "D" chords to start the song and then gathered a bunch of kitchen utensils for added percussion. Enjoy!
